Student Community-Based Projects

Arnold

Penn State students from the New Kensington campus worked to clear Japanese knotweed and trash from the riverbank along the Allegheny River in anticipation of the placement of a city sign with the city name on it facing the river.

Delmont

Heather Lash, Sara Ritter, and Austyn Diaz from Indiana University of Pennsylvania worked on the Westmoreland Heritage Trail Connections: Export to Delmont and Salem Township collaboration with the Delmont Visionary Committee, Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation, and Strong Growth Alliance. The students developed mapping and analysis of alternative possible routes for the Delmont Community and Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation Westmoreland Heritage Trail (WHT) to eventually fully connect from Trafford to Saltsburg.

Derry

Indiana University of Pennsylvania students and University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg professors assisted Strong Growth Alliance at various community visioning sessions for both DARCee (Derry Area Revitalization Corporation) and the community of Derry.

Students from Indiana University of Pennsylvania from the Department of Geography and Community Development created ideas for the redevelopment of the Lincoln Avenue corridor in Latrobe. Dana Keith work on traffic calming suggestions and design for a parklet along Ligonier Street where a burnt building had been torn down.

Ligonier

Indiana University of Pennsylvania students assisted Strong Growth Alliance at various community visioning sessions.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania students were vital to the success of demonstrating “tactical urbanism” at several Better Block events in New Kensington. Students created temporary bike lanes and painted “sharrows” on the road, added plants to demonstrate traffic calming measures, made door art and bike art to demonstrate pop-up art venues, along with participating in musical events. University of Pittsburgh students pitched in to clean storefronts and sidewalks

Scottdale

Evan Zavada worked with the Scottdale Task Force and Scottdale City Council to study the Business Retention and Expansion in the area. He also worked with the Annie Quinn and the Jacob’s Creek Watershed Association on trail and waterway projects.
